Antique Italian painting from the second half of the 17th century. Oil on canvas artwork depicting the Martyrdom of St. Bartholomew, based on the prototype of the famous painting by Jusepe de Ribera. As in all the production of the master of tenebrism, also in this painting we find an exaggerated representation of reality, violent and brutal, accentuated by anatomical and psychological details of the characters. St. Bartholomew was one of the twelve apostles and first Bishop of Babylon and was tortured and killed due to the envy aroused by his thaumaturgical qualities. 20th century frame in carved, gilded and painted wood with faux marble decoration (see photo), beautifully decorated. Painting that has undergone a conservative restoration with relining, replacement of the frame and color recovery in some points (see photo). Overall in good state of conservation.
