Great wooden sculpture of Saint Francis de Sales from the 18th century

Antique French sculpture from the 18th century. Work of exceptional size in wood and plaster, sculpted, lacquered and gilded depicting a life-size Saint, Saint Francis de Sales, of excellent quality. Francis de Sales (1567-1622) was proclaimed a saint by Pope Alexander VII and is one of the doctors of the Church. Polychrome sculpture of fabulous size, finely sculpted and chiseled down to the smallest details. Object for antique dealers and collectors of ancient sacred art, ideal for display in an important hall, study or private chapel. Work in beautiful patina which shows various signs of aging, discoloration and inactive woodworm holes (see photo). Sculpture carved on the back (see photo). The skill with which the sculptor depicted the drapery of the Saint's dress and the quality of its gilding is notable (see photo). Note the naturalism with which the hands are represented. With the left one he carries the missal to his chest while with the right he offers the viewer a heart adorned with a cross (see photo). Object from a high period, overall in good state of conservation with due signs of aging.
